NATURE VS. FUTURE
I’ve been tracking this indie label since before they were really working with organic materials, because the designs are so catchy. And now that they’re working with sustainable materials such as organic cotton, organic wool, hemp, soy, bamboo, seacell® (seaweed), lyocell (wood pulp), Ingeo™ (created from corn), and recycled fabrics such as Polartec® (made from soda pop bottles or industry waste), I can wear their clothes in peace. Somehow the asymmetric designs make me feel just right in this crazy mixed up world. And if I had a job, I would totally wear their stuff to work and be the coolest business lady at the corporate brunch. If I had a job.

I Love Linda

LINDA LOUDERMILK
Linda Loudermilk is a couture designer who continually takes eco-fashion to the next level. Really, she is the Chloe of eco-lux. My favorite. Simply my favorite designer. Everything she makes is beautiful, this woman walks on water- natural spring water that has not been tampered with and that is not swimming with pollutants caused by the production of her phenomenal clothing.

Listen for Anna Cohen

Anna Cohen
Portland (represent) designer Anna Cohen has long been leading the way in eco-lux designer fashion. Her clothes are as elegant as they are sustainable. She uses bamboo, soy and organic materials to make her high-fashion dresses, shirts and denim. I would even venture to say that her eco-friendly fashion philosphy and excellent taste has been an inspiration to the sustaible fashion industry in general. And her middle name is Blossom, which is great, because it means she’s down with trees.

It's Tam & Rob Time
TAM AND ROB
Tam and Rob is a fairtrade women’s clothing line out of the U.K.* whose emphasis is on the fair-tradeness, but they use organic fabrics and vintage accessories to make their simple yet stylish clothing. Their clothes are made in Nepal and India, and are pretty sweet. If you buy a shirt for your self, they give one to the person who made it, so you’ll get a fair-trade twin and can walk around knowing that somewhere in India is a lady looking good, thanks to you.
*Here’s the thing- England is awash in amazing organic and eco-friendly clothing brands, and great online and real-life stores that carry them. But buying things close to home is an important factor in reducing the amount of wasteful impact we have on our environment. I mention this because I want to pressure these awesome Brits brands to increase their U.S. distribution. Still, supporting fairtrade and eco-friendly clothing brands from anywhere in the world is an important step in creating a sustainable market for sustainable clothing. There. I’ve said my piece about that.

Ciel, Mes Enfants

CIEL
I have been stalking this brand of eco-friendly high-end clothing out of the UK for over a year now, and although it’s getting a little easier to find here in the states, it’s still a pain in the butt. But worth it, because not a lot of people make eco-friendly satin party pants. Sarah Ratty’s Ciel clothing line uses AZO-free dyes and recycled fabrics, and her stuff ranges from elegant and dainty to hot and flashy. And it’s all great. And it’s all kinda expensive… which isn’t so great. But that’s what sales are for.
