Beyond Skin Is Sooo In

BEYOND SKIN

Beyond Skin makes super hot shoes from non-leather materials. Their emphasis is more on the ethical aspect of not exploiting people (crazy, right?), but they are completely vegan, and the world would definitely be a better (and greener) place if there were more vegetarians out there, and unless the leather is vegetable-tanned, fake leather is a billion times better for the environment, materials-wise.

Calling Calleen, Calleen Cordero

CALLEEN CORDERO

These boots from Calleen Cordero were made for pro- ambulatory movement of the lower limbs of the human body. In other words, they were made for walking, okay? They were "made for walking." There, I said it. And they were also made for people who don’t want more toxic tannery by-products in our cute little creeks that run past our big city apartments. They were hand made by out-of work writers in North Hollywood, using vegetable tanned leather. And they are super hot. As are her belts and bags, too.

Autonomie, 4 Me and U

AUTONOMIE PROJECT

A trip to the gym will never be the same after lacing up a pair of AP Athletics' Autonomie Project Ethletic trainers. Think of them as your favorite Chuck Tailor’s without the weight of Nike’s carbon footprint on your shoulders. With high and low-tops styles, and a street-friendly blend of Fair Trade ethics, all natural canvas uppers, and soles from FSC-Certified sustainable latex, your feet will beg for a set. So why not make them happy and “just do it”.

Charmone, I'm Sure

CHARMONE SHOES

Becoming more environmentally-friendly is a complicated process. Is leather better than synthetic? Well, that depends- on where the leather comes from, and how the synthetic material is made. Most leather comes as a by-product of a pretty wasteful (not to mention cruel) practice of factory farming, and the process of tanning that leather can create a lot of harmful by-products of its own. So, now that I haven’t really answered the question, let me tell you about Charmone shoes. They are made (sweatshop free) in Italy, where studying shoes is actually taught in school, and Brazil, where… people often wear nothing but shoes. They use vegan micro-fiber to make some of the coolest looking designer shoes out there, and they strive to incorporate recycling into all of their day-to-day business practices.

So, if done right, synthetic materials can be gentler on the environment, and pretty shoes can be gentler on your feet’s self-esteem. Win-win.

Simply Green Toe

Green Toe

In 2005, Simple shoes changed the way they thought about shoe production and created Green Toe, an eco-friendly line of shoes that has inspired the company to work toward becoming %100 sustainable. But anyway, look at these shoes- they look just like real shoes! Because they are, they're just made from unusal stuff, like milk cartons, tires, and cardboard, mixed with renewable resources like cork, bamboo, jute, organic cotton, and wool. And they make bags, backpacks and wallets out of this stuff too. Crazy cool.

Gimme Mohop

Mohop

Mohop is a shoe company unlike any other. One woman, Annie Mohaupt, out of Chicago, makes all the shoes herself. The basic design is inspired- interchangeable ribbons attached to soles made with rubber from recycled tires. So you get the sole, and then you attach the different ribbons to them and create new and wonderful foot dressings for any occasion. Truly cool. Really different. Very cute. And eco-friendly, since Annie uses the most environmentally-friendly woods, glues, sealers and inks available.
