Sweet Skins, Not Just For Cannibals

SWEET SKINS

It's hard to find reasonably priced organic clothing that doesn't look like it was made by hippie moms, for other hippie moms, so it's cool when you find a brand that manages to make ethical, eco-friendly clothing for less than $100.

My head is so full of eco-friendly swimwear that I can't remember where I came across Sweet Skins, but they have some cute stuff, including (but not limited to), purple organic underwear, which is a good aura color to strive for, especially for your butt.

So You Say You Want An Ecolution

ECOLUTION

Ecolution is one of those eco-brands that makes a lot of different stuff, some of which is kinda maybe not so cute. BUT, some of it is totally cute. So, fine, I’ll go through it and pick out all the best stuff, which is still more than most brands have to offer. Like their cute striped hat, and I’m strangely drawn to this hemp belt and this cute little sailor top and some of their bags are pretty good too. And it’s all really eco-friendly, not just kinda- they are totally dedicated to environmental sustainability.

I'm OK, You're OKo Box

THE OKO BOX

This shop was started by a woman in North Carolina- let's call her "Leslie" because that's actually her name- who not only really gets just how important this shift to organic and sustainable clothing is, but also realizes that making eco-friendly fashion affordable is the key to making a greener world a reality. She even uses organic, 100% bio-degradable, recyclable (sort of), human models! How eco is that? Totally eco. Just like the rest of this sweet little online shop.

It's So Very Viridis

VIRIDIS LUXE

This brand makes really great, luxurious clothes, out of hemp combined with other sustainable fabrics like bamboo and cashmere. I tell ya, it is a far cry from the snot-colored hemp necklaces sported by many a Phish fan back in the nineties. In fact, I feel dirty even associating the two forms of hemp material! Viridis Luxe is from another hemp planet entirely- one were clothes strive to be beautiful and comfortable, while still being sustainable.

So You're Green, but You're not a Twig?

RAWGANIQUE

Granted, most organic and sustainable clothing brands are small companies, run by just one or two designers catering to a small clientele comprised of, well, small people. In other words, if you’re not a size 8 and under, you’re out of luck. So I’m going to periodically hunt out clothes (that aren’t hideous) that come in larger sizes.

The first place I can think of to check out is Rawganique. Generally, I find their stuff a little plain, and maybe a little hippie, but they have a few staples that could easily be dressed up into an outfit suitable for a fashionable lady looking to step out in some organic duds.

So here’s the link. But you have to promise that you’ll only wear the clothes I pick out for you… www.rawganiqe.com

The Katz Meow

EMILY KATZ

Ah, Emily Katz. I want to be her, so I can be the one who made all these beautiful clothes come to life. This girl/clothing label out of Portland makes dresses, jackets, and tops out of sustainable fabrics, like soy jersey, hemp, recycled poly denim and organic fleece. Her clothes are amazing. And she plays music, which is pretty sweet.

Satori Moves

SATORI MOVEMENT

Technically, Satori Movement is first and foremost a skateboarding company- they make wheels and grip tape and other skateboard-y things, but they also make clothes! And shoes, and bags, and belts (to hold up those baggy skater pants), hats, and CLOTHES, out of bamboo, hemp, soy, and recycled materials.

Now, I haven't sported the skater look since I fell off my Mr. Men skateboard and cried, but it still has a certain appeal, even on girls. And you know you always check out that random guy on his board cruising past the bar at night. Don't deny it! I totally saw you looking at him! He was cute, in his hoodie and baggy pants (the only time that baggy pants are okay). So, for yourself or for your BF, check out Satori Movement's sweet line of eco-friendly clothing.

Take Flight with Passenger Pigeon

PASSENGER PIGEON

Since all the way back in 2005, Heather Schibli’s eco-friendly clothing line, Passenger Pigeon, has been churning out adorable designs made without the use of harmful pesticides and sweat shop labor. Or labour, as they spell it in Canada, from whence this company hails.

I have this lovely dress, in burnt orange, and I wore it walking down Robertson the other day, and got like, 4000 compliments. So, cute dresses, skirts, coats, and even computer bags- all made from organic cotton, hemp, or tencel (a natural fiber that easily biodegrades). Let’s all move to Canada and look all cute and eco-friendly, like, all the time.

Live Out Loud with Livity Outernational

Livity Outernational

Out of Topanga canyon comes a clothing and accessory company dedicated to sustainability… and stuff made out of hemp. They are political- with an outward message of environmental revolution and an inner message of putting their money where their mouth is by using organic and recycled materials, and fair trade practices to make their hats, scarves, bags and clothing. They use Straw, Hemp, Organic Cotton, Bamboo, Soy, Recycled Plastic Bottles, and Veggie-Oil-Based Synthetics to make a fashion statement that is actually really saying something.

Hemp Hoodlamb Hoodlums

HEMP HOODLAMB

They’re straight outta Amsterdam, where they know all about the mary jane and the plant it comes from. So they make awesome warm winter coats and accessories out of pot. Enjoy! Snoop Dogg certainly seems to really like his HoodLamb jacket.

Hemp, Too Pretty To Smoke

MOCIUN

Caitlin Mociun makes clothes out of hemp. No, she doesn’t make beaded hippie necklaces or rope-sandals that disintegrate as you walk. She makes beautiful, elegant dresses like the one in this photo. And she makes creative, interesting shirts like the one in this other photo. She is an artist who uses organic and alternative materials to achieve her fashion feats. Love it.
